The document contains the government’s neutral position on a Senate bill that would designate August 28 as “Orel Day” among the country’s significant days. The government appreciates the effort to commemorate the persecution of the Orel organization after 1948 and to emphasize the values of democracy, freedom, and civic responsibility. At the same time, however, it points out that further expanding the list of significant days may weaken their symbolic significance and that the proposed day partially overlaps with existing commemorations of the victims of the communist regime. According to the government, the intended purpose can be achieved by means other than amending the law, such as through educational and commemorative activities.
